One-Cent Sales Surtax

The Greater Naples Chamber was a strong supporter of the Collier County one-cent sales surtax, which was approved by voters in November 2018. The surtax is expected to raise $490 million over seven years, and will be used to fund a variety of infrastructure projects, including improvements to roadways and bridges, and construction of a regional park, workforce training center, and mental health facility.

The Chamber believed that the surtax was a necessary investment in the future of Collier County. The county is growing rapidly, and the infrastructure is not keeping pace. The surtax will help to ensure that the county has the infrastructure it needs to support its growing population and economy.

We also believes that the surtax is a fair way to raise revenue. The surtax is a small increase in the sales tax, and it will be applied to all purchases, regardless of income level. Everyone who benefits from the county's infrastructure should contribute to its upkeep.

We are committed to working with the county to ensure that the surtax funds are used wisely. The Chamber will be providing regular oversight of the surtax, and will be working to ensure that the funds are used to improve the quality of life for all Collier County residents.

Here are some of the specific infrastructure projects that the Collier County one-cent sales surtax will fund:

  • $200 million for road and bridge improvements
  • $100 million for a regional park
  • $50 million for a workforce training center
  • $50 million for a mental health facility

The Chamber believes that these projects are essential to the future of Collier County. The road and bridge improvements will help to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. The regional park will provide a much-needed space for recreation and relaxation. The workforce training center will help to ensure that Collier County has a skilled workforce. And the mental health facility will provide much-needed services to those in need.

COLLIER COUNTY'S ONE-CENT SALES SURTAX

The Naples Chamber supported Collier County’s 2018 local option sales surtax increase. The seven-year, one-cent sales tax increase is expected to raise approximately $490 million for a variety of transportation, capital and community projects.

In November 2018, Collier County voters approved a seven-year, one-cent local option sales surtax. The local option sales surtax is estimated to raise approximately $490 million and will end on Dec. 31, 2025 or when the $490 million is collected.

Revenue generated from the local option sales surtax will be used for tangible capital projects. In Collier County, the money will be used for a variety of infrastructure projects, including improvements to roadways and bridges, and construction of a regional park, workforce training center and mental health facility.

The Collier Board of County Commissioners appointed a seven-member oversight committee in 2019. The committee is tasked with providing oversight and review of expenditure reports to ensure the county is in compliance with the ballot language.

Sales Tax Updates:
  • Collier’s infrastructure sales surtax oversight committee met on 3/6
    • Committee unanimously approved two road projects, including the Vanderbilt Beach Road extension, and voted 6-1 to approve improvements to the Domestic Animal Services shelter.
    • Committee continued a discussion/vote on the Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park, because committee members had questions.
